Indians split doubleheader with Western
The McCook Community College Indian baseball team split a pair of games with Western Nebraska Wednesday, winning the first game 9-8 in walk-off fashion and losing the second game 5-1.The Indians are 12-24 on the season and 6-6 in the division. Western Nebraska is 8-27 and 6-9 in the division.
This weekend MCC will once again try and navigate around weather concerns. The schedule calls for the Indians to travel to Sterling Friday against Northeastern Junior College at 3 p.m. Then a three-game series this weekend against NJC at home with the first game tentatively set for Saturday at 1 p.m. and a doubleheader Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
Sunday is also scheduled to be "Fan Appreciation Day" for both the MCC softball and baseball teams. Weather permitting, the MCC Indians Boosters Club will serve free hot dogs and potato chips to those in attendance as a 'Thank You' to those Indians fans who have supported MCC athletics throughout the 2017-2018 school year.

McCOOK COMMUNITY COLLEGE 9, Western Nebraska 8: MCC won the first game 9-8 in walk-off fashion after trailing 8-0. The Indians scored the game winner with two out in the bottom of the eighth inning. Hunter Rynders (Centennial, Colo.) lined a one-out double to leftfield, advanced to third on a groundball and scored the game-winner on an infield error.
Two of the first three Western Nebraska hitters hit home runs in a five-run first inning and the Cougars struck for five first-inning runs on six hits and a walk.
After the Cougars scored two more in the second the Indians were forced to come back from a 7-0 second inning deficit.
MCC responded by scoring five runs in the third. Julio Seperich (Las Vegas, Nevada) singled to start off the rally. After Tanner Zeggil (Stagner, Ontario) drew a one-out walk Jake Sanford (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) singled to make it 7-1. Michael Sookdeo (Brampton, Ontario) followed with a three-run home run to left-field to close the gap to 7-4 and Chris Bellemare (Grande-Carriere, Quebec) made it back-to-back home runs and cut the Cougar lead to 7-5.
In the Indian fourth inning, again it was Seperich who started off the rally with a one out-walk. Rynders walked then with two outs Sanford launched a three-run home run to right field to give the Indians an 8-7 lead.
Western Nebraska tied the game with a Jonathan Bermudez home run to tie the game in the sixth inning before the Indians won the game in the eighth frame.
Jacob Lombardelli (Windsor, Colo.) picked up the win in 2.2 innings of relief. He gave up two hits and struck out six. Jesse Bloom (Centennial, Colo.) started for MCC but didn't make it out of the first inning being charged with five earned runs on six hits. Casey Quagliano (Colby, Kan.) pitched came on in the first and pitched 4.2 innings. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out six.
MCC had 12 hits in the game. The Indians third-and-fourth place hitters Sanford and Sookdeo went five-for-eight, with three runs scored, had seven of MCC's eight RBIs, a pair of home runs and a triple. Rynders had a double and single for MCC.
Western Nebraska 5, McCOOK COMMUNITY COLLEGE 1: In Game 2, MCC scored the only run of the game and took the lead in the second inning on back-to-back doubles from Dalton Bartling (Ashland, Neb) and Parker Kretzel (Thornton, Colo.).
Western came back with a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 4-1 lead and scratched a run across in the top of the seventh.
Ryan Marstiller (Centennial, Colo.) took the loss on the mound for the Indians. He hurled 3.2 innings, gave up four earned runs and five hits. He walked two and struck out four. Braydon Peif (Greeley, Colo.) came on to pitch 2.1 innings of hitless, scoreless relief and Tyler Cox (Mississauga, Ontario) pitched the final inning surrendering one earned run on two hits.
Bartling had three of MCC's seven hits in the second game, Jason Hill (Surrey, British Columbia) had two. MCC also got hits from Jake Sanford and Kretzel.
