Coach Jon Olsen

Jon Olsen is in his 25th year overall as a junior college head coach and his 20th at McCook Community College. He has coached more than 1,000 games at McCook and 1,300 in his career, winning 442 at MCC and 134 at Independence Community College.

He was the first head coach in MCC history in 2002 then had a five-year stint at Independence CC in Kansas, where his teams went 134-147, before returning in the summer of 2007 to take over the Indian program again. His teams have won 404 games since his return and have a .444 winning percentage.

LAST SEASON: MCC finished at 27-26 overall and 14-15 in the Region IX standings. Over the past two years MCC has taken advantage of games at the Jaycees Sports Complex, compiling a record of 46-22.

There were nine players from last year’s team that moved on to four-year programs.

Six players earned Region IX post-season honors. Cory Wouters was named the Region IX Player of the Year while Dalton Berg was named to second team. Nathan Hutchison got honorable mention and named to the Gold Glove Team. Freshmen pitchers Tait Anderson, Aviv Bobrov and Landon Molloy all received honorable mention. Wouters was also the first ever MCC player named an NJCAA First-Team All-American.

Academically, 13 MCC baseball players were named to NJCAA all-academic teams and 18 players were selected to the 2023-2024 Academic All-Region IX men’s team.

COACH OLSEN, a McCook native, graduated from McCook Senior high school in 1995. Following graduation, he played two years of junior college baseball in Kansas. He graduated with his associate degree from Colby, then transferred to Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill., where he completed his baseball eligibility and graduated in the fall of 1999 with a bachelor’s in kinesiology. Olsen stayed on in the spring of 2000 as an assistant coach at Wheaton, then in 2000-2001 he went back to Colby and spent one year as an assistant there.

From 1997-2002 he also served as the head coach in the McCook American Legion Baseball program, including a state runner-up finish in the summer of 2001. Olsen completed his master’s degree in health/physical education and recreation from Emporia State University.

Olsen was hired in the spring of 2001 to start the baseball program at McCook Community College. After one season as the Indians coach, he was hired to lead Independence Community College in Independence, Kan. At Independence, Olsen built the Pirates into a program that consistently competed for a top spot in the highly competitive Jayhawk East Conference. In his first season Olsen helped lead the Pirates to their first winning season in school history and was named the 2003 Jayhawk East coach of the year.

OLSEN’S FINAL TWO recruiting classes in Kansas produced three Major League Baseball draft picks, in 2007 Josh Beal was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds, in 2008 Jon Nagel to the Chicago Cubs, and in 2009 Justin Beal went to the Philadelphia Phillies. Former MCC Indian Jake Sanford was also a third-round draft pick of the New York Yankees in 2019, with other former Indians signing professional contracts as well.
In July of 2007 Olsen returned to MCC as head coach. During his time at McCook, he has seen more than 129 players move on to four-year schools, including more than 40 to NCAA Division I schools.

Olsen also is a full time Health and PE instructor and athletic director at MCC.

He is married to Nicole and they have son Avery and daughters Elsie and Emery.
